Tennis is easy to learn and play for the recreational player.  Start with someone near your level and desire for play.  Get with your local teaching pro before you get too competitive.

  Tennis is a demanding sport for the elite competitor - the pro's are world-class athlete's that train full time.   While we can all learn from watching and analyzing the pro's,  its somewhat hard to appreciate all the actual pace, spin and precision on the tour - recreational players need to develop skill fundamentally.

ESPN set out to rate sports, at the elite level, for 'degree of difficulty' (click here for ESPN's results).  They used 10 criterion and a panel of experts to rate 60 sports.  Tennis ranked 7th (1 being most difficult) ahead of baseball, soccer, skiing, swimming and track and field to name a few.
